Mythology
Associated with Demeter, goddess of the harvest. When her daughter Persephone was taken to the underworld by Hades, Demeter's grief made the earth barren — explaining winter. Spica represents the sheaf of wheat she holds.
Astronomy
The Virgo Cluster (~54 million ly) is the heart of the Virgo Supercluster, to which our own Milky Way belongs. Through a telescope, dozens of galaxy patches are visible. Spica is two massive blue stars orbiting every 4 days, producing 12,000× the Sun's luminosity.
Notable Stars
Spica (α Vir)
15th brightest, 250 ly, close binary system
Porrima (γ Vir)
Beautiful binary with nearly identical white components
Vindemiatrix (ε Vir)
Yellow giant, 'the grape gatherer'
How to Find It
'Arc to Arcturus, spike to Spica' — follow the Big Dipper's handle. Galaxy hunters treasure this region: M87 (giant elliptical with famous black hole jet), M84, M86, and chains of galaxies are visible with an 8-inch scope on dark nights.
