Mythology

The Romans separated these stars from Scorpius around Julius Caesar's time, associating them with Astraea, goddess of justice — the last immortal to leave Earth. She ascended to become Virgo, leaving her scales beside her in the sky.

Astronomy

The autumnal equinox fell here ~2,000 years ago, connecting the scales with equal day and night. Gliese 581 in Libra (20 ly away) hosts multiple exoplanets, some in the habitable zone — one of the most studied systems in the search for habitable worlds.
