Mythology
Sent by Artemis to slay the giant hunter Orion after he boasted he would kill every animal on Earth. Both placed on opposite sides of the sky — they are never visible simultaneously. Polynesians call it Māui's fishhook, used to pull islands from the sea.
Astronomy
Antares ('rival of Mars') is a red supergiant 700× the Sun's diameter — placed at our center, its surface would extend past Mars' orbit. Rich deep-sky region: Butterfly Cluster (M6), Ptolemy's Cluster (M7), and globular M4 — one of the nearest at 7,200 ly from Earth.

How to Find It
Unmistakable J-shaped curve dominated by red Antares. From northern latitudes, hugs the southern summer horizon; from the south, passes nearly overhead. Sweep binoculars along the tail for extraordinary density of star clusters and nebulae.
