Mythology

Aphrodite and Eros transformed into fish to escape the monster Typhon near the Euphrates, tying themselves together to avoid separation. The vernal equinox moved here ~2,000 years ago; the 'Age of Aquarius' lies ahead as the equinox continues its slow westward drift.

Astronomy

Contains the vernal equinox point, making it astronomically significant despite its faintness. M74 is one of the most difficult Messier objects — a face-on spiral galaxy 32 million ly away requiring dark skies and a moderate telescope. The Circlet asterism (7 stars) is the most recognizable part.

Notable Stars

How to Find It

Faintest zodiac constellation — no star brighter than magnitude 3.6. The Circlet sits below the Great Square of Pegasus. Best during autumn evenings. Rewards patient observers who appreciate subtlety — tracing the V-shaped pattern of two fish joined at their tails.
