Mythology
In Greek mythology, Aries represents the golden-fleeced ram sent by Nephele to rescue her children Phrixus and Helle. Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its golden fleece in Colchis — the prize later sought by Jason and the Argonauts, one of the most famous quests in ancient mythology.
Astronomy
Despite its modest size (441 sq°), Aries held enormous historical significance as the location of the vernal equinox. Due to precession, the equinox has shifted into Pisces, but Aries retains its title as the 'first sign' in Western astrology. The constellation contains the spiral galaxy NGC 772.
