Mythology

Zeus disguised himself as a magnificent white bull to abduct the Phoenician princess Europa. The Pleiades within Taurus represent the Seven Sisters — daughters of Atlas, placed in the sky by Zeus for protection from the hunter Orion.

Astronomy

Home to two famous clusters: the Pleiades (M45, 444 ly) and the Hyades (nearest open cluster, 153 ly). The Crab Nebula (M1), remnant of the 1054 AD supernova observed in daylight for 23 days, contains one of the first discovered pulsars.

How to Find It

Aldebaran, the Bull's orange-red eye, is easy to spot — follow Orion's Belt upward and right. The Pleiades are visible to the naked eye as a misty patch; binoculars reveal dozens of stars. Under excellent conditions, count up to 14 individual Pleiades.
