Mythology

Represents Ganymede, a Trojan prince so beautiful that Zeus transformed into an eagle to carry him to Olympus as cupbearer to the gods. The stream of water flows into the mouth of the Southern Fish (Piscis Austrinus), whose bright star Fomalhaut lies below.

Astronomy

Contains the Saturn Nebula (NGC 7009) and Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) — the nearest planetary nebula to Earth at just 655 ly. TRAPPIST-1 in Aquarius (40 ly away) hosts seven Earth-sized planets, three in the habitable zone — a prime target in the search for life.

How to Find It

Large constellation with no bright stars, south of Pegasus during autumn. The Helix Nebula spans half a degree (size of the full Moon) but is very faint — a challenge even with telescopes. Delta Aquariid meteor shower in late July produces about 20 per hour.
