Mythology
Represents Pan, who transformed into a sea-goat to escape the monster Typhon by diving into the Nile. The Babylonians associated it with Enki, god of water, knowledge, and creation. The winter solstice once occurred here, giving the Tropic of Capricorn its name.

Contains M30, one of the densest known globular clusters. Its core has collapsed, with stars packed millions of times more densely than near our Sun. Algedi (α Cap) is an optical double — two unrelated stars at different distances that appear close by chance.

How to Find It
A wide squashed triangle in the 'Sea' region of the sky. Below magnitude 3 at brightest — requires dark skies and patience. Start from bright Altair in Aquila and look south. Binoculars resolve the double stars Algedi and Dabih.
