Mythology

The crab was sent by Hera to distract Heracles during his battle with the Hydra. Crushed underfoot without breaking his stride, Hera placed it in the sky as a reward for loyal service. In Babylonian astronomy, Cancer was the gate through which souls descended from heaven into human bodies.

Astronomy

The Beehive Cluster (M44) contains 1,000+ stars at 577 light-years. M67, one of the oldest open clusters (~4 billion years), helps astronomers study stellar aging — its stars have similar composition to our Sun.

How to Find It

Challenging from light-polluted areas (brightest star is only mag 3.5). Find the Beehive as a fuzzy naked-eye patch midway between Pollux and Regulus. Binoculars transform it into a stunning swarm spanning 3× the diameter of the full Moon.
